JSON Formatter tool

About this tool

A JSON formatter turns compact or uneven JSON into structured text that is easier to inspect, edit, and review. Paste an API response, configuration file, or saved data object, then choose two spaces, four spaces, or tabs. You can also minify valid JSON, alphabetize object keys, and check the document for syntax problems before using it elsewhere.

Everything runs in your browser, so your JSON is never uploaded and nothing is kept after you close the tab. Validation points to the line and column where parsing failed, which makes a missing comma or quote easier to locate. The size display compares the input and result, so you can see exactly what minifying or formatting changed.

How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. 1Paste your JSON text into the input editor.
  2. 2Choose two spaces, four spaces, or tabs for indentation.
  3. 3Select Format, Minify, or Sort Keys for the result you need.
  4. 4Read any line and column error, then correct the invalid syntax.
  5. 5Copy the finished JSON after checking the before and after sizes.

Features

Three indent styles

Format nested JSON with two spaces, four spaces, or tab characters.

Line column errors

Invalid input reports the exact line and column where JSON parsing stops.

Deep key sorting

Alphabetize keys inside nested objects while keeping values and array order unchanged.

One-click minification

Remove optional whitespace from valid JSON and compare the smaller output size.

Size comparison panel

See input and output byte sizes before copying the processed document.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find an error in invalid JSON?

Run validation and read the reported line and column. Check that location for missing commas, unmatched braces, unescaped quotes, or other invalid JSON syntax.

Does sorting JSON keys change the data?

Sorting changes the order of keys in objects. It preserves each value and leaves the order of array items alone.

When should I minify a JSON document?

Minify when you want fewer bytes for storage or transfer and do not need human-friendly spacing. The parsed data stays the same.

Can the formatter use tabs instead of spaces?

Yes. Pick tabs in the indentation control, or select two-space or four-space indentation.

Is sensitive JSON uploaded for formatting?

No. Formatting, validation, sorting, and minification happen locally in your browser, and the page does not keep your input after the tab closes.
